Edwin V. Morgan journals, 1899-1926; bulk: 1899-1906.

Diaries (1899-1901, 1904-6, 1926) of an American diplomat who served his entire life in the American diplomatic and consular service. Morgan traveled extensively, both as part of his work and to and from his diplomatic appointments, with descriptions and accounts of his voyages and travels in the U.S., Europe (particularly Italy and Germany), and Asia, especially Japan, China, and Korea. His journals illustrate the social life of a diplomat, although some comments on political events of the time are included. Interfiled in the journals are numerous menus, visiting cards, programs, etc., and photographs of China, Cuba, Japan, Khartoum (Sudan), and of the monarchy in Russia. Morgan served in Japan, Korea, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Cuba, and his diaries reflect the foreign relations between the United States and these countries. His 1904 appointment to Manchuria was never filled due to the Russo-Japanese War. Included in his diaries are comments and newspaper clippings about the crisis in the Samoan Islands; letters from John Hay; notes and clippings about the Boxer Rebellion and fighting along the border of Korea and China; souvenirs from the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt; and an account of a visit to Seoul in 1905 by Alice Roosevelt Longworth.
